PPI Charges
It is very important to understand any PPI charges that you are going to be responsible for. Most lenders give you the impression that they are doing you a favor by adding that cost into your loan. Then you don’t have to come up with any additional funds in the beginning for the cover. Yet they will also be charging you interest on those premiums so you do want to be careful.
These types of charges can vary significantly from one lender to the next. It is the responsibility of the consumer to become familiar with them. An itemized breakdown of all the fees should be provided and reviewed before anything is signed. Any fees that don’t seem right should be discussed with the lender and re-evaluated.
It is a good idea to become familiar with the PPI charges for similar protection through other lenders too before signing the documents. That way if the cost is more than with someone else that can be discussed with the lender. If the lender feels you may be taking your business else where due to the fees they may give you another offer that is more affordable.
They are often able to charge what they want to though because most consumers don’t take the time to go through that information. This is often how mis sold PPI occurs, as they like the idea of what a PPI policy has to offer them but they haven’t had it fully explained to them as is required by law. They also don’t want to think about the fact that they may ever really have to rely on that cover at some point.
The calculations that are used to determine PPI charges are very complex to follow. This is where many consumers don’t want to admit to the lender that they don’t understand how they came up with those figures. The average cost is ¼ of the amount of money that is borrowed. So depending on the loan transaction that will take place, those charges can end up being quite substantial.
When the charges are for bank overdraft fees or for credit cards that a person has those costs are calculated differently. First, there is usually a flat fee that is charged each month for that cover to be in place. Second, there are charges based on the amount of overdrafts or the amount of credit card balance that the person has.
Make sure you fully understand any PPI charges that you may incur with a loan, your checking account, or credit cards. You may find that the cover isn’t very good and the rates are ridiculous. If you are already involved with such a contract talk to your lender to see what can be done to make positive changes on your behalf.
